Restaurants in Hong Kong | July Update

Navigating through Hong Kong food scene and the restaurants in Hong Kong is truly more than just tasting the iconic food like the dim sum or noodle. Hong Kong is a vibrant city and the food scene shares the same language. There are always new cafes and restaurants sprouting up at different corners of the city. I have compiled some suggestions for the new tables and restaurant updates in July to guide you through the upcoming month and beyond.

1. Ando - Fresh New Table

Argentinian Chef Agustin Ferrando Balbi will open Andō, his first solo restaurant launched in partnership with JIA Group, the Hong Kong-based hospitality firm founded by Yenn Wong. Situated on 52 Wellington Street, Central. Andō is now taking reservations from 7 July. For chef Agustin Ferrando Balbi, Andō is very personal. Derived from his Latin surname Ferrando, Andō in Japanese also connotes a sense of contentment, while in Spanish, it is the equivalent of ‘-ing,’ the verb participle to describe the act of doing in the present. Such complexity and multiplicity in meanings lie at the heart of the Agustin’s cuisine at Andō, one that nods at his ancestral roots in Spain, while gazing at the land that shaped his craft – Japan. “My time in Tokyo has truly transformed the way I cook,” mulls Agustin, “Andō is the purest expression of my heritage and training, and I am thrilled to finally be able to share this with the world.” Andō will open for lunch from Tuesday to Saturday from 12 to 2.30pm (last seating), and dinner Monday to Saturday 6 to 9pm (last seating). Reserve Andō here.

3. Crown Super Deluxe - Fresh New Table

Black Sheep Restaurants is excited to introduce the latest addition to the list of restaurants in Hong Kong - Crown Super Deluxe, a lavish teppanyaki affair on Wyndham Street, now taking reservations from 12 June onwards. While every teppan is manned by at least one chef, heading up the team is Chef Toru Takano, a teppanyaki veteran originally from Niigata, along with his wife Chef Ami Hamasaki. Expect all the teppanyaki classics but with a focus on beef, showcasing the best grain-fed steaks from USDA Prime, to Australian Wagyu and a rotating premium selection from small Japanese farmers specialising in well-marbled cuts of beef. A la carte options are available, but the best way to experience teppanyaki is to pick a pre fixe menu, there are three to choose from with the highlight being the Deluxe ($1188 per person) and then let the chef take care of the rest. The Deluxe meal starts with a selection of Toyosu Market Sashimi, Tokushima Fruit Tomato with Japanese Sea Salt, and Teppan Spiny Lobster in Coral Butter. This is followed by A5 Kagoshima Wagyu Beef is served with signature Crown Sauces, but each bite of meat is best tried solo to get the full robust flavour of the cut cooked on the teppan. And of course, the meal is rounded out by Lobster Miso Soup and Wagyu & Garlic Fried Rice. Apart from the main menu, they also have a 30-seat dessert and whisky lounge which you can expect to find Nouvelle Pattiseries as well as Japanese whiskies and American Bourbon. Make a reservation for Crown Super Deluxe here.

4. Mandarin Oriental Hong Kong Special Menu

The iconic Mandarin Oriental Hong Kong will bid a goodbye to the restaurant Pierre due to an upcoming renovation. The renovation will see Pierre Gagnaire’s Michelin starred restaurant close after a successful 14-year tenure, while Man Wah will be expanded into the space currently occupied by M Bar. To pay tribute to his tenure, Chef Gagnaire and resident Chef de Cuisine Jacky Tauvry have created a series of menus called Memoires of Pierre Gagnaire available for dinner from 8 June until 30 July 2020. Guests are invited to experience his innovative food with a five-course, seven-course and nine-course dinner menu priced at HKD 1,688, HKD 1,988 and HKD 2,388 respectively. In addition, a Wine Not tasting menu will be offered for lunch every Saturday for the months of June and July. Guests will be able to choose the three-course menu at HKD 888 or a five-course menu at HKD 1,288, paired with premium wines selected by the resident sommelier. On the other hand, Man Wah’s Executive Chinese Chef, Wing-Keung Wong, will highlight the restaurant’s illustrious heritage by serving an All Time Favourites tasting menu, alongside his Signature Celebration menu from 15 June until 30 July 2020. Chef Wong’s signature dishes will be featured on a five-course set lunch menu and an eight-course set dinner menu priced at HKD 888 and HKD 1,688. Please call +852 2825 4000 for reservation.
