Sebastian Gunawan, one of the well known Indonesian labels showcased his Spring Summer 2017 collection in Hotel Mulia Senayan. Taking cue from the icon of the 20th century, Marchesa Luisa Casati, the designer took elements of the belle epoque, to the modern silhouette

The show started with a bang as the red curtain curled away. The stage was filled with illuminating lights in its grandiouse decor. Some models were already on the stage, slowly dancing their way as what the elite does back then in the 20s. There was a mix elements of victorian as well as the exotic sense from the Asia shown through the mix of embroidery and patterns. Show was started late, but once the first model walked on the runway, everyone was on the edge of their seat. Show was divided into two for a more formal dresses and a bit more casual ones.

A little background about Marchesa Luisa Casati, she is one of the most epic celebrity in her time. She travelled the world to find exotic skins, bizarre mannequins was at her home, and she walked with fur coat with parading cheetahs for an evening strolls. Not only Sebastian, other world renowned designers like McQueen and Tom Ford has taken many inspirations from her life and yes, the fashion label Marchesa was named after her.

For Sebastian's show itself, we can see that elements of Marchesa was put in the elite looking dresses with gilded headpiece resembling the icon's hairstyle by Rinaldi A Yunardi, mix of colours, and crystal studs on the clothing. The collection was filled with Marchesa-style fur as well as crinoline style dresses resembling the era's popular silhouette.

To add a more feminine elements, Sebastian also incorporated some stiffened ruffles, floral applique, as well as plugning neck line for a sexy evening look. Some of the less extravagant dresses was plain satin pieces as well as short dresses. Overall, his collection was well thought and it is a very nice thing to see an Indonesia designer taking inspiration from world renowned fashion icon and interpret it in their own ways. Can't wait to see the next collection.
