Exploring Daikanyama

Exploring Daikanyama

I had a chance to explore Daikanyama. I spent my afternoon exploring shops and cafes and had a very nice quite walk along the route. Daikanyama is known as one of the most expensive and upscale neighbourhood to live in, but i kinda feel i know why. The neighbourhood is serene, houses and buildings are mostly low rise, there are a lot of greeneries, along the way you can find delis, cafes, a nice park to walk, supermarket, and more.

Forest Gate Daikanyama

Forest Gate Daikanyama is a small mall connected to an apartment building. It is a beautifully designed comple by globally-renowned architect Kengo Kuma. The building has a vertical garden concept with what is seemed from afar are stacked wooden boxes. It has a minimal waste philosophy as well as upcycling. The main building has a total of 10 floors and a basement. Three lower levels are shops and cafes like Blue bottle and Jo Malone, while the upper floor are offices and residences. You can also find Cirty Cafe and shop at a connected mini building beside the main one.

Daikanyama T-Site

Daikanyama T-Site is a small compound that comprises of various stores like the glass building Tsutaya bookstore, a grocery shop, community hall, several cafes and restaurants, as well as a little park for people to sit down and enjoy the morning or evening walk. It is probably one of my favourite place in Tokyo for a slow afternoon, people watching, while sipping my coffee. The space itself is actually not that big, but it is very cozy and heartwarming. There are more locals compared to tourists

Exploring shops and neighbourhood

I feel at that I might love this neighbourhood a little bit too much. Unlike the body touristy areas like Shinjuku or Shibuya, this area is more low key and less crowded. Trendy and relatively quiet boutiques like Maison Kitsune, Officine Universelle Bully, and more hip Japanese designer shops are lining up the street, allowing you to browse and shop minus the crowd.

  1. I have never been to Japan, my mom traveled there when she was with the MET opera. I would love to go there one day. This building is so cool. Indeed this always the case it seems neighborhoods with more green space and that are more quiet are generally more expensive. Love your photos!
