Sapporo Travel Guide

Arriving at Sapporo

Sapporo, the vibrant capital of Hokkaido, offers a captivating blend of urban sophistication and natural beauty. From bustling markets to serene parks and lively shopping streets, a day in Sapporo promises a diverse and unforgettable experience. Let's explore some of the city's must-visit spots. I flew to Hokkaido from Osaka using a domestic flight and I must say the New Chitose Airport is quite impressive. It's super efficient, easy to navigate, and they have many Hokkaido special delicacies. Some people visit Hokkaido by JR Pass, but actually the main stop of the Shinkansen is Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto Station which is another 3 hours from Sapporo. So, if you want to save time, travelling by air to Sapporo from another city in Japan is the fastest choice.

Things to do in Sapporo

Dive into the Flavors of Nijo Market

Start your day bright and early at Nijo Market (二条市場), often dubbed "Sapporo's Kitchen." This historic public market, with roots stretching back over a century, is a sensory feast. Wander through narrow aisles teeming with vendors proudly displaying their fresh seafood catches of the day, from glistening crabs and sea urchins to plump scallops and salmon roe. Don't miss the chance to try a kaisendon (seafood rice bowl) at one of the many small, cozy restaurants nestled within the market for breakfast or brunch. The vibrant atmosphere and the sheer freshness of the produce make it an essential Sapporo experience.

A Cozy Coffee Break at Kotobuki Cafe

After the bustling energy of Nijo Market, find a moment of calm at Kotobuki Cafe. This charming local cafe offers a warm and inviting atmosphere, perfect for a relaxing coffee or a light breakfast. Known for its delicious pastries and carefully brewed coffee, Kotobuki Cafe provides a delightful contrast to the lively market, allowing you to recharge before continuing your Sapporo adventure.

Stroll Through the Serene Odori Park

Next, make your way to Odori Park (大通公園), Sapporo's iconic green lung that stretches for over a kilometer right through the city center. This beautiful park transforms with the seasons, from a vibrant flower garden in spring to a dazzling illuminations display in winter for the Sapporo Snow Festival. Take a leisurely stroll, admire the various sculptures and fountains, and simply enjoy the open space. It's a perfect spot for people-watching or enjoying a picnic lunch purchased from a local deli.

Explore the Bustling Tanukikoji Shopping Street

Just a short walk from Odori Park lies Tanukikoji Shopping Street (狸小路商店街), one of Hokkaido's oldest and most extensive covered shopping arcades. Stretching for about a kilometer with over 200 shops, this street offers everything from souvenirs and traditional Japanese goods to trendy fashion boutiques, drugstores, and a plethora of restaurants and izakayas. Whether you're hunting for gifts, seeking out local delicacies, or just want to soak in the lively urban vibe, Tanukikoji provides hours of entertainment. The Donquijote opens until late midnight, I really had a good time exploring since I couldn't sleep early.

Relax and Recharge at Androoms Hosuisusukino

As the day winds down, head towards the vibrant entertainment district of Susukino. For a comfortable and convenient stay, Androoms Hosuisusukino offers modern accommodations with easy access to all the nightlife and dining options in the area. After a day of exploring, you can relax in well-appointed rooms, knowing you're just steps away from some of Sapporo's best culinary experiences, from ramen shops to craft beer bars and traditional Japanese pubs. It's the perfect base to experience Sapporo's energetic evenings.

I must say that Sapporo is by far one of my most favourite cities in Japan. It is modern but also quiet. Convenient but not too bustling. Many of the shops and restaurants close at 8 or 9 pm, I guess the city is great for an early riser! I would love to explore other cities in Hokkaido next time and maybe exploring the ski destination.
