What To Eat In Vietnam | Street Food

What to eat in Vietnam for first time visitors

What to eat in Vietnam if you ask me? There are so many Vietnam street food on my list and I didn't even know where to begin. We tried to separate the food based on the city, so as not to repeat it. Street food is one of the perfect way to learn about a country's culture. I bet you, there's nothing more interesting that sit on the sidewalk, tasting the real Vietnamese food. This post is going to make you hungry, but here is my list.

Vietnamese food in Ho Chi Minh

Lunch Lady Saigon - Bun Mam
Made famous by Anthony Bourdain, The Lunch Lady is a stall at district one offering traditional Vietnamese food or soup. The menu differs from day to day, but here’s what you can find. Monday it will serve Bun Thai soup (seafood), Tuesday is Bun Moc (pork and mushroom soup), for Wednesday it’s Ca Ri Ga (curry). We visited on a thursday, so we got to try the Bun Mam (fish broth soup). On friday you can find Bun Bo Hue (beef soup), for Saturday it’s Banh Canch Cua (seafood soup), and finally Bun Rieu on a Sunday (tomato and crab soup).

Verdict, our bun mam was delicious and the broth has so much flavour into it, it was medium bodied so that was not too overwhelming for us. We love how the different toppings are brought together into one bowl. The Lunch Lady stall also offers various local snacks like the Vietnamese roll and spring roll.

Chung Cư, Lô D, Nguyễn Đình Chiểu, Đa Kao, Quận 1. Opens from 10.30 am to 4 pm

Hu Tieu Cua - Thanh Xuân Hủ Tiếu Cua Mỹ Tho

One of the best Hu Tieu in Ho Chi Minh that you should try is the Hu Tieu Cua. It is a Vietnamese dish of rice noodle and soup. It has various toppings inside like crab meat, prawn, minced meat, rice noodle, and vegetables. The place is located by the road side and you will sit at a low table and probably that's why I love this place as it gives me the authentic street food taste and ambience I want. The soup is rather heavily bodied with the paste that you combine together with the noodle and toppings. Nevertheless, it is one of my new favourite dish to date!

62 Tôn Thất Thiệp, Bến Nghé, Quận 1, Hồ Chí Minh, Vietnam. Opens from 6 am to 3 pm

Vietnamese Roll
Vietnamese roll is one of our favourite snack! We tried them at a restaurant located in mall in District one, well as you can guess, we had a bite after shopping. We also tried the street food version at the Lunch Lady. Vietnamese roll consist of soft transparent outer skin with the prawn and vegetables on the inside. It is the most simple yet delicious snack!

Wrap and Roll - Vincom Center, Hầm B3, 72 Lê Thánh Tôn, Quận 1,

Vietnamese food in Hanoi

Pho - Pho 10 Ly Quoc Su
Other Vietnamese dishes like Pho and Bun Cha was tasted in Northern Vietnam, Hanoi. Meanwhile we tried Com Tam and Banh Mi in Da Nang. One of the most famous Pho Bac specialty eateries in Hanoi, Pho 10 Ly Quoc Su delivers the authentic Hanoian Pho, which is clearer in broth. Compared to the Southern Pho (Pho Nam), the one in Hanoi is more salty (whereby the Southern pho has sweeter broth) Hanoi pho has more basil and no beansprouts, while the souther one has. It is accustomed not to add any extra sauce inside this pho as well

Pho 10 Ly Quoc Su - 10 Lý Quốc Sư, Hàng Trống, Hoàn Kiếm, Hà Nội

Bun Cha - Bun Cha Ta
Originated in Hanoi, this noodle soup consist of fried pork spring roll, vermicelli noodle, and a bunch of vegetables like cabbage, basil, vietnamese balk, and bean sprout. It is also accompanied by dipping sauce made of fish oil, crushed garlic, lemon, chili, etc.

Bun Cha Ta - 21 Nguyễn Hữu Huân, Hoàn Kiếm, Hà Nội

Banh Cuon
Banh Cuon is a rolled rice noodle topped with fried shallot. It can have filling or not and usually is accompanied by pork soup on the side. To eat it, you can dip it into the sauce first.

Vietnamese food in Da Nang

Com Tam - Com Tam Ngon
Possibly one of the best dishes in my life. Com tam (translated as broken rice) is one of Vietnamese dishes, served with succulent grilled pork, fried egg with runny yolk, and a bowl soup on the side. This hidden gem itself is a humble store tucked in a small lane in the heart of Da Nang.

Com Tam Ngon - 85 Hà Huy Tập, Hòa Khê, Thanh Khê, Đà Nẵng

Banh mi
We were also craving for Banh Mi (Vietnamese sandwich) and we were so lucky to find this little stall nearby. From Com Tam Ngon, walk towards your right until you find a junction, just cross the road (Distance between Banh Mi stall and Com Tam Nuon is about 220m

So what's your favourite dish ?
