Kuromon Market : A Day of Food Tasting

Kuromon Market Osaka

An Overview

Kuromon Market (Kuromon Ichiba Market) is one of the famous traditional market in Osaka specialising in seafood, fresh goods, sweets, and other produce. Since food is one of my main reasons to travel, visiting Japan means trying their specialty food and dishes as much as I can. This market is always crowded with tourists and locals alike. I was literally keep eating one food after another and was blown away by the number of food types available. There are many many rows and stalls in this market. Honestly, I was just roaming around randomly and checking each stalls that I saw. To my surprise, all the food I tried were fresh, delicious, and totally don't disappoint. It is perfect for those who love seafood and want to try different Japanese street snacks in one place altogether.

How To Get There and Opening Hours

Kuromon Ichiba Market Osaka is located not far from the famous Namba Area. You can reach there by taking the train and alight at Nipponbashi Station on Sennichimae or Sakaisuji Subway lines. It opens daily from 8 am to around 6 pm. Most shops close on Sundays and Public Holidays. I went there in the afternoon around 2pm and it was quite crowded. Even though this is a traditional market, but it is very neat and well kept. Some traditional market in Asia is quite messy, but it's not the case in Japan. The road is paved very well and the market is also fully sheltered.

Food You Should Try

I was definitely kept on eating as there are rows and rows of stalls. Just navigate through the lanes and you can use the map they give in the tourist information area to help you. Please note that there are only little space for seating area designated near the tourist office. Else you will be eating it standing near each stalls.

Fresh Seafood
I'm a fan of oyster and you can get a handful of fresh premium oyster and uni at an affordable price. Certain seafood like oyster or sashimi is best eaten raw. On the other hand they also serve various seafood that you can grill on the spot like the kani or saba fish. If you want to take home the fresh seafood and cook it on your own, you can also do so, as I see a lot of locals buying it.

Street food snacks
If you love street food snacks, you will be glad to find a lot of different varieties here in Kuromon Market. From open, tango (japanese sweets on a stick), okonomiyaki, takoyaki, to other fried food. To complete the snacks, you can also try the local homemade soya milk or tea.

Japanese Sweets
Japanese sweets are one of favourite items sold here. From mochi, cookies, mini cakes, to other packaged sweets that you can bring home as souvenirs. You can also find different dried sweets like dried prunes or dried pomelo. I tried different types of mochi and also mini pancakes and all of them were delicious.

Fruits and vegetables
I dare say that Japanese fruits are one of the best in Asia. You can find gigantic strawberries, melon, and pretty apples packaged beautifully. A lot of people in Japan also send fruits as gifts, therefore their packaging is always on point.

What do you think about this market? Do you have a similar traditional market in your city? Let me know so I can keep it as a reference!
