A more sustainable fashion choice
Sustainable fashion choice and our role as a consumer
I believe as a consumer we take a big role in the retail industry and sustainability. A more sustainable fashion choice will give a bigger impact not only on you but also to the makers and the environment. Fashion industry is the one of biggest waste emitter in the world. It produces 10% of humanity's carbon emission. As people buy more often (60% more garment in 2014 than in 2000), but only worn several times, this essentially produce much waste. How do you define a sustainable fashion choice?
A company can be counted as a sustainable or ethical company if they have a clear role in managing their materials, supply chain, waste, people, impact towards planet as well as animals. They may not have all of them, but at least they take part in one of them. How to have a sustainable wardobe
Wear a sustainable material
Eco friendly materials include natural, organic, and recycled materials such as linen, organic cotton (not conventional cotton), recycled wool, organic hemp. On the other hand, cheap materials made into low price cost garment like viscose releases many toxic chemicals as it is being processed. Furthermore, washing polyester garment releases micro plastics that goes into the ocean.
Get a vintage or thrifted piece
Instead of getting a new product all the time, which means they a factory keep on producing them, try to go for a vintage or a thrift store shopping. Vintage also can mean to wear something from your mother's or sister's wardrobe like I do. A garment that is kept well can be passed down from generation to generation.
Check the brand's stand on sustainability
You can check the company's sustainability or environment responsibility on their website. This can means they take part in a local factory that empower women, giving back to the community, and whether or not they pay their worker fairly. Aside from checking on the company's website, you can check Good On You App or web that has a clear rating for thousands of brands.

Great color palette.
ReplyDeleteFor me sustainable fashion is all about wears. I manage cost per wear, make the most of a garment and when I am done with it, find a succession line.
I actually made the decision to also switch to more sustainable fashion and support brands that have the same values so thanks for sharing this!

Yes indeed more needs to be done regarding this. The one thing about this crisis is how there are drops in air pollution and they are saying that the water in Venice is clear and you can see fishes swimming around b/c the polluting ferries and barges are not operating...

Yes thank you for sharing this!!! In the past month I have aimed to shop from more sustainable brands because the fast fashion industry is so detrimental to our environment. I need to step up my thrifting game!

Great post! I'm all about sustainable fashion - I shop mostly secondhand or from companies who are local and use ethical practices in their manufacture. I was so thrilled and proud to read of a local company (Smoking Lily) in my town who got noticed when a medical officer wore one of their garments on TV: https://globalnews.ca/news/6701263/coronavirus-alberta-chief-medical-officer-periodic-table-dress/
ReplyDeleteIsn't that awesome?

Effortlessly Sophisticated
I'm all about vintage! I also get excited when I pull items from my closet from several years ago, and someone at work or out and about compliments my outfit and I proudly say it's from ______ years ago <3
ReplyDeleteGreen Fashionista
Organic materials such as cotton require many litres of water and drain natural water resources. It is great that some companies are more green than others but the key issue is overconsumption. I think the best way to do sustainable fashion is to wear second hand and vintage garmets and to shop our closets. The less we buy new things, the better.
ReplyDeleteyou look very pretty btw.
ReplyDeleteGreat post and a very important subject! I prefer to opt for natural materials and more sustainable companies where possible, especially when I know it's going to be a core piece in my wardrobe. I don't buy huge amounts of clothes and tend to wear individual pieces a lot so I do feel a bit less guilty when I can't make those options for whatever reason, but sustainable fashion is definitely something we should all be trying to make a conscious effort with x

These are very good tips from you - I'm happy about them. And I hope that many of your readers will follow your example! The look suits you wonderfully. I too (almost exclusively) wear clothes made from organic cotton, hemp, linen or second-hand clothes. And I wear it for many years or even decades - until the clothes "fall apart" ;-) or no longer fit. And I really enjoy mixing the individual pieces of clothing again and again.

I've thought about this a lot more over the recent months to a year. When I first began blogging for fashion fun, I had 4 large trash bags full of clothes given to me from a few friends. From there I learned how to mix and match with what I have and it began a trend. As my budget increased, I'd run out for clearance finds at big name dept stores, etc - Sometimes I still do! However, I'm learning the value of quality clothing that will last a long time. I get a nice piece and add it to what I have and this has tamed down my extras that I don't need. Anyway, I like how you explained sustainable and I like supporting companies that shoot for one or more of those descriptions!
ReplyDelete(I had written another comment but I think I deleted it by mistake, so I'll try again! I apologize if it's a duplicate)
ReplyDeleteSuch a great post! I'm also into a sustainability journey, starting from my wardrobe :) It's the right choice for me and our planet! I especially like thrifted and vintage pieces 'cause they're great and really affordable <3
Stay safe girl and take care of yourself! xoxo
Color Me Fall
Sustainability is really important to me. Back in high school and college, I would go to fast fashion stores weekly to buy new clothing items. These days, I rarely go shopping and when I do, I try to only shop at brands that are eco-friendly and have ethical labor practices.
