Thean Hou Temple Kuala Lumpur | A Mini Guide
Thean Hou Temple is one of the oldest and biggest temple in Kuala Lumpur. Well, not exactly as big as the Batu Caves, but this temple is quite grand on its own. I have seen a numerous photos of it, therefore I was very curious in finding out more about it myself. As a background, Thean Hou Temple is a six tiered Buddhist temple, built by the Hainanese people. It was constructed in 1981 for six years. The temple itself is built for the Chinese Sea Goddess Mazu. How to get there and opening hours
The building is located at Persiaran Endah road. As per other attractions in Kuala Lumpur, you can visit it by using a public transport, which is bus no 700, 734, p701. Nevertheless the easiest way to visit it is by using Grab. Grab or e-hailing is very commonly use in Kuala Lumpur, just make sure you embark from the right pick up point. The temple itself is open from 9 am until 10 pm. I went there after lunch at about 2 pm and it was not very crowded.Address: 65, Persiaran Endah, Taman Persiaran Desa, 50460 Kuala Lumpur, Wilayah Persekutuan Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
What you can find
The front entrance has a multi-arched gateway with red pillars, to symbolize prosperity and good fortune. Also, the temple has dragon-inspired columns, ornate carvings, and pagoda style rooftops. Upon the entrance to the main prayer hall, there is a large brass bowl where people put their joysticks after prayer. Inside, you can find a prayer hall with three altars. After praying you can also get a fortune telling letter by shaking the sticks on a round compartment. Take one stick that is sticking out to get your number. Then you will open the mini drawer with your number to read the letter. At the back of the main temple there are statues depicting the legend of people who did goodwill. Along it you can find a mini garden, as well as a statue of Guan Yin statue set amongst rocks and water. On the lower ground of the temple, you can also find an office where they do ROM (Register of Marriage) and stalls selling souvenirs.
