Arashiyama Bamboo Forest Kyoto Travel Guide

Planning a Trip to Kyoto Bamboo Forest

Visiting Kyoto won't be complete without visiting the famous Arashiyama Bamboo Forest. This nature wonder is one of the Kyoto things to do. It is well known for its beautiful rows and rows of bamboo trees. The path itself can be enjoyed in about an hour or so, but if you want to really take a slow walk and stop by you can do it in around two to three hours.

How to Get to the Kyoto Bamboo Forest

To go to the Arashiyama Bamboo Forest, take the JR train and alight at Saga Arashiyama station. Upon alighting, you will see a sign that point to the Arashiyama Bamboo Forest, follow the path. Walk about 10 minutes and cross the road to enter. You can choose to walk or rent a bike at the bike shop nearby the station. The place is open 24 hours, but I will suggest you to come in the morning to avoid the crowd or in the afternoon to have some warm sunlight.

What to expect

Arashiyama Bamboo Forest is a free entrance attraction and is suitable for families. Along the road to the place, visit a Kyoto kimono rental shop. You can try to wear a kimono for a day to walk around the area. In Japan bamboo is being used for many purposes including manufacturing mats, boxes, and other homewares since many years ago. If you fancy another experience, you can also take a rickshaw tour in Arashiyama. The crowd at Arashiyama depends on the season. I went there on May and it wasn't too crowded. As you walk further there will be less crowd. If you go on peak season like the Cherry Blossom season, the place will be so much more crowded.

a little haiku inspired by this trip:

Sometimes happiness comes from free things, but, really, walking around this bamboo path is so tranquil and therapeutic. When I visited, there were quite a lot of people but it doesn't matter. Everyone seems to be enjoying this path. There are many families, couples, group of friends, but also a solo traveller like me. It was a complete zen moment to hear the bamboo leaves rustling, feels the cool air, and the gleam of sunlight upon your face. The fresh smell of bamboo and the green view will make you admire nature at its best.

If you have more time to visit the area, I would suggest you to take the Sagano Romantic train ride that will take you to a journey of enjoying beautiful scenery. You can depart from Saga Torokko station (located beside the JR Saga Arashiyama), alight at Kameoka then come back.
