Maison Margiela Autumn Winter 2020

As the world comes into a new decade, fashion takes over with its new cycle. Maison Margiela Autumn Winter 2020 speaks louder than merely a stage show. John Galliano takes the word "recycling" to a whole new level with the Recicla concept.

The Recicla Concept

Recycling, upcycling, and restoring the pieces from the brand's archive is not something new for Maison Margiela. In fact, its collaboration with H&M back then was inspired by the label's previous iconic pieces as well. "Recicla!" Galliano exclaimed. He brought forward the coat, pants, top, and so much more from  the label's vintage collection and gave it a new life. The recycle concept is a step up from the brand's eponymous Replica collection that showcases reedition of vintage clothing that Martin Margiela has from years ago. Galliano took a different step by reframing vintage found pieces that he reworked into something new and combined it with new pieces for the Maison Margiela Autumn Winter 2020 collection for both mean and women.

For example, the look 1 above is made of recycle blue vintage coat cut into an elongated collar worn with a detachable asymmetric bow sleeve, a sea foam tulle long sleeved dress and an aquamarine strap dress. The entire look is accessorised with a pair of brown leather Tabi Mary Jane and a recycle red leather 5AC bag. On the other hand, for the men's look above (look 11) the model wears navy twill coat with loafers and a recicla wicker bag.

Maison Margiela Autumn Winter 2020 Colour and Material

A huge range of spectrum appears in this collection. You can find bright colours like red, yellow, absinthe to muted pastels like cornflower blue and sea foam, combined with neutral palette like brown, beige, and black. Materials used in this collection include wools, flannel, knitwear, tweeds, and silk. Bourgeois gestures are captured within garments through tulle inserts. Recicla vintage garments on the other hand appear in their respective original fabrics along with Recicla wicker bags and Recicla Snatched bags made from taro leaves, while the Recicla 5AC bags are created from luxury leather overstocks.

Overall,  I like the concept of Recycle that John Galliano brings. It gives a new life to vintage archives and at the same time reworking the idea that fashion is creating with a conscience. It re-evaluates the term "limited edition" pieces with leftover materials. Sometimes, it doesn't have to be entirely new, just like our wardrobe. We can also mix and match vintage found pieces with a brand new item. So, what do you think about the collection?
