Taman Sari Water Castle Yogyakarta

Overview of the Site

Taman Sari Water Castle Yogyakarta is a historical site of the Kingdom of Yogyakarta built in 1758. It is formerly used as vacation site for the Kings of Yogyakarta and the family. There are several section of the place, but it is well known as a bathing complex. Think of the Roman Baths in England and this site has similar purpose. read on to know more information about this site.

Taman Sari Water Castle Yogyakarta Location, Ticket, and Visiting Time

The historical site is located in the Kraton area. It is open daily from 9 am to 3 pm. The ticket price is Rp 8,000 for local (includes camera permit) or Rp 18,000 for tourist. It is advised to come here in the morning so the weather won't be too scorching hot. The entire complex is huge and comprises of several buildings. Once you buy the ticket, you will be divided into small tour groups. Since it is post pandemic, the site wants the tour to be more organised so you are not allowed to roam on your own. I think it is pretty cool since you will learn the history and the facts from the tour guides.

Tour of the location

I spent approximately two hours to visit the entire complex. Built in the mid-18th century, the Taman Sari had multiple functions, such as a resting area, a workshop, a meditation area, and a defense area. Taman Sari consisted of four distinct areas: a large artificial lake with islands and pavilions located in the west, a bathing complex in the centre, a complex of pavilions and pools in the south, and a smaller lake in the east. Nowadays, only the central bathing complex is well preserved and the rest is occupied by the locals.

The central Segaran Lake Area welcomes the visitor with the sound of the water fountain and the ripple of water sound. It is the main complex consisted of a man-made lake called Segaran ('artificial sea') with some buildings located on artificial islands in the middle of a lake. The buildings are actually connected by an underwater tunnel and was once used as the starting point for the royal family to reach the Taman Sari pools via a vessel. Next we went inside to the bathing complex where the Kings and family used during summer time.

Then we went outside and ventured to another side of the building wing where they have the vacation house for the Kings and family and a meditation place. The entire building and the furniture inside like bed frame or table are made of stone. The air inside is quite chilly and they really preserve it so there is no electricity inside. On our way to the higher tower, we passed by the famous Underground Mosque with stairs (pretty sure it is quite famous on Instagram) but we couldn't go in because they were doing a restoration. After a few minutes walk, we went up the stairs and arrived in the higher tower. From here we can see the city with a bird eye view.  It is said that the Kings purposely built the Tugu Jogja, Kraton Palace, Taman Sari with a specific calculation in a straight line with the Merapi Mountain and Parangtritis Beach.

Final Thoughts

Honestly, even though some of the buildings are in ruins, I can somehow portray the majestic building in its glorious era. This is a must visit for those visiting Yogyakarta area because you will learn much about the history. The tour group provided is very helpful too since the entire area is pretty huge. So don't forget to bookmark this post for your future visit to Yogyakarta!

  6. Hi there! I hope you're having a lovely summer so far!

I love that you always take us to new places! I would love to visit the Taman Sari Water Castle one day too! For now it seems so far aways but hopefully in a few years!

I love that you took a lot of magical pictures, specially details that can show us the way people used to approach to other traditions and how some of they keep living with us.

So good that despite the "ruins" or some details you managed to travel to the glorious era! The outfit that you choose to go is also perfect in colors!!
