Life lately in the midst of coronavirus

Hello, everyone! I hope you are doing well wherever you are. This Sunday I decided to slip a special posts among my regular travel post. I know that a lot of my readers and blogger friends are from different parts of the world, Europe, Great Britain, USA, and so on. If you don't know yet I live in South East Asia. I have heard so many news about the coronavirus issue, but I want to hear from all of you first hand. Until today there has been 160,000 cases discovered and 75,000 cases recovered in various countries.

It affects the way we work, travel, and study

The impact of this infection hit the economy big time. I listened to Joe Rogan podcast with Michael Osterholm, an internationally known expert in infectious disease, that this pandemic could lasts for months to come. As China manufactures quite a lot of supply in ASEAN countries, manufacturers need to rethink on how they produce their goods. Universities and schools are postponing their classes and foreign student exchange. Most of all, travel industry is experiencing a big hit. We only discovered that travel is on the rise, but this issue will definitely makes us postpone or cancel our flights.

How it affects where I live

When the issue first emerged at the end of January, we know that it only affect The People Republic of China, but as time goes by it spreads all over the world to many different countries. Early February, I was still travelling to Manila. At that moment, there were only 3 patients discovered. I was aware of the issue, but I was still travelling as per usual, especially it was for a blog work. Fast forward to today, there are over 100 people affected and Manila is in lockdown.

I believe I'm not the only one who travel itinerary and plan is scrambled. I was suppose to fly to Japan for the Fashion week tonight, but everything is cancelled, and so as my flight. At the moment Japan infection has rises to more than 800, therefore school has been postponed and residents are encouraged to work from home. All tourist places like museums and Disneyland are being closed down until early April or so. Reporting for the Japan Fashion Week has been one of my dreams for a period of time, unfortunately it need to be postponed until the next cycle, which is on October. I have another friend who suppose to fly to Vietnam for an engagement event with the family, but again, the flight need to be cancelled in the midst of this situation. Even though I was a bit sad, but I totally understand that this is for our own good and for other people own good as well.

At the moment in Kuala Lumpur, there's recently an announcement on March 16 that Malaysia is on a nationwide movement control order. All residents are not allowed to go in or out of the city, all businesses and all places of worship will be closed. Therefore, everybody is also working from home as well until end of March. Everyone has been stocking groceries since last week. This was done as there was a spike few days ago linked to a public event, making the number reached 400. If you are already in Malaysia, you might require to fill in travel history paper and undergo temperature screening at 80% of the public spaces. This includes museum, several malls, government offices, and tourist attractions like the Petronas Tower. If you have a travel history from China (Mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau), Japan, South Korea, Italy, Iran, Denmark, and who had a direct contact to suspect, you may not be granted for entry at tourist attractions. We have been trying to stay at home as much as possible and avoid mass public gathering.

On the other hand, the malls in Singapore is relatively empty and government is trying their best to support the business by giving extra allowance for the rental fee. You also need to stay home for about 14 days if you are entering Singapore as a resident, PR, or long term pass holders from all ASEAN Countries, Japan, UK, and Switzerland (effective March 16). They also need to fill in data on where they will serve the 14 days notice. All ASEAN nationals entering Singapore should also have to submit requisite information to Singapore Ministry of Foreign Affair at their home country before entering Singapore. From March 24th onwards Singapore restricts all entries for short term visitors or transit from all countries.

Meanwhile in Indonesia, especially Jakarta, social distancing has started. A lot of public places are on shut down for disinfectant and cleaning. Most concerts and public events are cancelled to avoid further spreading. Transportation like the bus and MRT has undergone less effective hours. Some companies has been issuing a work from home notice for its employees.

What we can do to minimize the spread

I guess the best things we can do is to strengthen our immune system by eating healthier food, do exercise, and get enough sleep. Study shows that  lack of sleep will cause brain function to not be as active and weaken our immune system. Aside from washing your hand regularly and use hand sanitiser, I believe that we should be aware of our own body condition. Please stay home if you are feeling unwell and try to report work from home. Minimize all the unnecessary travel and contact so we can push the infection down together, check this Washington Post social distancing graph! Let go of the stress as it weaken our immune system. Remember that over reaction and fear will increase stress. You can try different hobbies at home as well like reading, cooking, gardening, painting, or learning new things online.

Perhaps in this time, we should slow down a bit, take care of our body and home, and rethink the way we view the planet and universe in general. It's really time to reflect back on our impact to society and the mother earth. Call it a coincidence, but towards the end of the 2019, Amazon forest, which acts as the lung of the world, experiences severe forest fire. Not long after, a new pandemic occurs affecting our respiratory system.

For someone who believes in the theory that life will always working it out for us, there is far greater intelligence than human work. There are quite positive sides of this. The Venice canal has been clearing as there are less boat activities. The air pollution in China has been decreasing as factories slows down. So what if all of this is here to remind us of life? To reset and remember of what is truly important for us? Like, reconnecting with family and being kinder to the people around you, because we are in this together. Reducing travel so that the environment, the skies, the air, our lungs all get a break. To living more humbly and mindfully, reconnect, and really ask yourself — why am I here and what is really important to me? An invitation to turn inwards rather than the usual going out. How hard does one need to work to be able to live, to have a life outside of work? Most importantly to be kinder to the environment, to find our purpose, and to be kind to each other in the entire process.

What we can do to support other content creators

As most of us are staying at home these days, perhaps we can do more blog walking and Instagram profile view and visit other content creator's page. Business is quite difficult, but all we can do is to give support virtually even each of us live far away from each other. Other than income, constant page views and engagement like comments and likes are very important. I would kindly ask you to check my Stylefrontier Instagram page, leave a comment or two and I would gladly do the same thing in return. Well, perhaps we can try to promote each other pages or DM me! Any collaboration is possible ;) Same thing goes If you drop a comment in this blog post (or previous posts) Let's continue to support each other in this time of crisis. Therefore, when the situation gets better, we will rise again together and no one gets leave behind.

Do you still believe in travel?

I believe we should use our social channels to spread positivity instead of fear. You can be vigilant and cautious, but don't be panic. I still believe in travel and will start travelling again once the issue subsides. The real is question is when? I don't have the answer either. How does this condition affect your work, travel, or commuting in general? Where will you travel when all of this issue subsides? Share with me in the comment below. I pray for your health and your country wherever you are.

xoxo

  7. Stay safe girlie! Things are starting to get more serious here in the United States, but not everything is closed... yet. I have a feeling we'll be told to stay home for at least 2 weeks very soon. Thankfully, we are prepared and are enjoying our last days of "freedom" before hunkering down <3

  9. It's interesting to hear how other countries are being affected by the coronavirus. (I'm in the US.) I'm trying not to freak out about it, and to do my part by staying home, but it's certainly a wild thing to be a part of. Most non-essential businesses in my area are closed now, places that I just visited last week. So crazy. Stay safe!

  11. Praying for you too! We are on lock down with schools closed for the next 3 weeks and no restaurants or bars open. Grocery stores are empty of food and supplies. But I do think it will all be worth it in the end to decrease the amount of people affected. Stay safe and healthy!

  16. Wonderful blog post. It is so important that we all talk about it as much as possible.
I have postponed any travel indefinitely as I could not bare getting it (I am not a risk group) and then spreading it to someone who would be in big trouble because of my selfishness. I try to practise the best hygiene and strenghtening my immunity system. I wrote a blog post on that:

I hope you all stay safe and mindful of others and help even if they did not ask for it as many people are too proud to ask even when they are in trouble

  17. Such an unfortunate time. I was supposed to be heading to Florence in a few weeks but that's no longer happening. It's understandable, of course, especially with the extent of the issues in Italy. I'm eating as healthily as possible and trying to make sure I'm getting a bit more sleep to try and keep my body in as good shape as possible in case I do get sick. Hope you stay healthy! x

  19. The U.S is not yet in lockdown but most states have closed schools. In NY the Governor is calling for closing of bars and eateries. People can still travel domestically but not abroad. This is scary not just scary with the virus itself but to the economy and the impact that could have and even the possibility of society breaking down. Lets hope that does not happen.

  23. Thanks for sharing all of this. I believe we are all here in uncharted territories and we can only support each other socially since we are all at home in self quarantine. While our country or even state hasn't going on lockdown yet, things are getting quite grim here too. Sending my love to you and your families and country.

  24. Hello and thank you for stopping by over in my corner of the blogosphere! In Australia, we are lagging somewhat with the precautionary measures but no doubt we are bound to catch up with your experience in Malaysia soon enough. I've decided to pull out of my dance class tomorrow, sigh, and it'll be only a matter of time before the dance studio shuts its doors - the performances have already been cancelled. Thank goodness for the youtubes, so I can still dance in the living room at home. Sorry, my neighbours!

  26. Wow Singapore looks amazing, it's on my bucketlist!!

This whole situation is insane - I have always wondered what would happen in this type of scenario though - we are all so caught up in and reliant on 'the daily grind'. Can't wait for things to go back to normal however quick that may be.

I have a trip booked to Canada in september, I am really hoping this doesn't end up being affected. Fingers crossed it all calms down when summer arrives.

  28. Nice to see a comment from you today - I hope things ease up for you soon. I'm in Canada and we've closed our borders, even with the US. My work has sent me home, and it's all very stressful. I appreciate the reminder to get more sleep!

Thanks again for stopping by! We bloggers are a welcome distraction from all of this worldwide craziness, so it's important that we keep providing content for our readers. Take care of yourself, my dear!

  29. We're all in this together, so let's try to stay positive and calm! Today I saw a video of just how clean canals in Venice have become, people saw dolphins swimming in the waters for the first time. Air is clearer and people spend time self-reflecting and evaluating what is really important and what isn't. I guess the Universe wanted us all to pause for a bit and rethink life. I hope you and your family are doing well! xx
