Fushimi Inari Taisha Kyoto Travel Guide

Fushimi Inari Taisha shrine is one of the famous shrines in Kyoto that you should visit when you're in the area. It is noticeably adorned with thousands of Tori gate. Built in 711 AD, the shrine is a main worship place for the god of agriculture. More than two million people flocks here during the first three days of new year as the shrine is associated with good luck for business and prosperity. Read more to see what you can find in Fushimi Inari as well as the shrine etiquette guide for foreigners.

How to Go to Fushimi Inari Shrine

You can easily visit Fushimi Inari Shrine by taking JR train Nara line and alight at Inari station. From there you only need to walk a bit then cross the road to reach it. You can also take The Keihan Main line train as an alternative and alight at Fushimi Inari station, but it is a bit further.

Inside the Fushimi Inari Taisha

You will see the main red tori and romon while entering the temple. Fushimi Inari Shrine complex comprises of main tower gate, main halls, omikuji area, and rows of red torii leading up to the peak. All the torii here are sponsored by individuals or companies which you can see their name on the body of the torii, whose wishes or prayers has been granted. There are also some fox statues too which are closely associated with the Inari god.

Shrine Etiquette for Foreigners

General Etiquette in the shrine

You enter a shrine or temple by using the left or right side of the path, not the center one and use the main gate to enter, not the side door. Bow once before entering a shrine, then clean yourself before going to the main building. You can pray, do an omikuji, and viewing afterwards. Before going out, face the shrine and bow again.

Cleaning yourself before entering

Near the entrance of every temple in Japan, there is a water basin area used to clean yourself before entering the temple complex. Here's how to do it: Take the laddle, fill it with water and pour the water onto your left hand then your right hand. Take more water and pour onto your palm to rinse your mouth. Lastly, pour the water over the laddle handle then put it back.

Praying at the shrine

If you want to pray at the shrine, like Fushimi Inari Shrine, here are the steps: Put the 5 yen coin into the box then ring the bell by the handle. Bow twice, clap twice then say your prayer.
