Food in Hong Kong | 10 local restaurants you must try

Hong Kong is not only known for its shopping mecca and fast paced life, but also its unique food. There is so many food in Hong Kong, but today I will tell you the 10 traditional local restaurants you must try when you are visiting . I always feel that I can only summarise or giving you this list of recommendation only when I have visited a place for several times. Hong Kong is most probably the third city I have visited the most in my life so far. I've been to Hong Kong for both business and leisure (with family since I was young and trip with friends), some of these are traditional family favourites, while the other are comfort food you can have whenever you are there. Read on to find out more!

Tim Ho Wan (Sam Shui Po)

Trying Michelin Star food? check. Trying a must have food in Hong Kong? check. Having an affordable delicious food? check. Tim Ho Wan is definitely a must visit on your list. It is known for an affordable One Star Michelin Restaurant because of its BBQ Pork Bun.

Location: 9-11 Fok Wing Street, Sam Shui Po

One Dim Sum (Prince Edward)

Hong Kong is known for an endless options for Dimsum. What other Dim Sum shop you must visit beside Time Ho Wan? For me, it's definitely One Dim Sum. I write details about One Dim Sum in this post. They earned their One Michelin Star in 2012 even though they don't retain it. Nevertheless, it doesn't stop people from queueing and visiting the place every single day. It is definitely a non-pretentious dim sum shop that is enjoyed both by locals and tourists alike. There is no fancy looking character pao or Instagrammable food, but probably that's what I really love about this place.

Location: 209A Tung Choi Street, Prince Edward

海景粥店茶餐廳 Seaview Food Shop (Mong Kok)

One thing I really love about Hong Kong is that you'll never be hungry whatever the time is. Food may be limited in other part of Asia after dark for supper, but it's not the case in Hong Kong. I've been to this particular restaurant since I was young as it is a family favourite. This restaurant opens 24 hours, so it's great for dinner or even supper. My favourite is their assorted congee (HKD35) which is their silky porridge with a combination of seafood and pork. You can also try the soya milk, radish cake, and rice sheet rolls.

Location: 123 Sai Yee Street, Mong Kok

Honolulu Cafe (Wan Chai)

It's a traditional Hong Kong style coffee shop which is perfect for lunch. One of my favourite comfort dish is the braised pork rice served in claypot. Love how tender the pork meat is and the simple ketchup to accompany the dish.  Apart from that, their egg tart is seriously the best. The crust is crispy and the filling is unique and delicate - the melt in your mouth kind of custard. Complete that bite with their coffee and milk tea for an authentic Hong Kong breakfast experience.

Location: Luen Sen Mansion Hennesy Road, Wan Chai

Kam's Roast Goose (Wan Chai)

If you love roasted food, don't miss this Roast Goose from Kam's. Expect to taste juicy tender roast duck with crispy skin. The roast goose rice costs HKD55 /portion. Aside from roast goose, you can also try their roast pork and char siew.

Location: 226 Hennesy Road, Wan Chai

Mak's Noodle (Central)

Another comfort food to try is this warm beef noodle from Mak's Noodle. The shop actually has several locations, but I would recommend the one in Central area. Aside from having a lot of good food, the Central area is also famous for local label shops in PMQ and various Hong Kong Coffee Shop, so be sure to check it out while you are in the area.

Location: 77 Wellington Street, Central

Tai Cheong Bakery (Central)

This shop is a specialty bakery opened in 1954. They are well known for their type of egg tart with crisp cookie-like crust, not the flaky type. They also have other types of pastries like the red bean paste pastry, pineapple bun, wife cake, and chicken pie. Everything is made fresh daily. Even though the queue might be a bit long, but usually they move quite fast. The egg tart is HKD10 each while the Hokkaido milk tart is HKD13 each.

Location: 35 Lyndhurst Terrace, Central

Lan Fong Yuen

Another restaurant that serves traditional authentic Hong Kong food (cha chan teng), Lan Fong Yuen is a little gem located in the Central area built in 1952. Expect to find their famous Hong Kong milk tea made of Indian Assam Black Tea and Australian milk. The milk tea is best to be enjoyed together with their comfort food fare including french toast, pork bun, and chicken noodle.

Location: 2 Gage Street, Central

Tsui Wah (Causeway Bay)

Tsui Wah is most probably the go to place whenever I don't know what else to eat at night hahaha. In that sense, this local favourite cha chan teng has various comfort food best eaten after a long day of walk or shopping. The shop has been around since 1967 and has multiple branches in Hong Kong, Macau, and Greater China. The dishes you must try is their soft bread with generous butter and condense milk, maggi noodle with luncheon meat, and milk tea. The place is generally busy, so it's like a quick meal restaurant, not the type for sitting down and dining for too long.

Location: Sugar Street, Causeway Bay Commercial Building, Causeway Bay

Yee Shun Milk Company (Causeway Bay)

A kind of supper place for dessert, Yee Shun milk Company is well known for its hot and cold steamed milk pudding. I feel the hot one with ginger is just perfect for cold rainy days in Hong Kong. One thing you must remember is that each person should order an item, so probably you can order two different food items then share it. They do serve other dishes like sandwich and macaroni soup.

Location: 506 Lockhart Road, Causeway Bay

  17. Oh my goodness this all looks so amazing! I was only in Hong Kong once for a few days as a 10 year old (my dad was in the army and we were living in South Korea so we went for spring break). I know as a child I didn't partake in the amazing food much as I would now! A good reason to go back for sure!

  26. Hello dear, thanks for stopping by the blog!

Just checking out these recommendations! To be honest I don't know a lot about Hong Kong food, but there's a restaurant here in Barcelona specialized in this area and they had dim sum, really like the flavor and the eating process... but i imagine the restaurants in the real area are even better!

For me the best part is the dessert and the sweet tooth, so I would definitely put Honolulu Cafe on top of my list of priorities.

Of course I'll eat a lot, specially for the energy required to go shopping!

Gonna check the other posts of the month!
