Luxury Train from Jakarta to Yogyakarta Experience | Taksaka Luxury Sleeper Train

Ever since I was a kid, I've always been fascinated with a train rides. There's something rather nostalgic in them. I used to go to a railroad nearby my old house with my dad just to watch trains pass by while counting the number of cars. My dream is most probably to try as many train rides as possible in different parts of the world! Honestly speaking, luxury train concept is rather new in Indonesia, therefore I'm so excited to try it! Unlike well known services like Belmond that have few days route across different countries, this concept is rather like an upgraded experience for inter cities train. Nevertheless, I am still excited to try this new luxury train concept for my trip. Staking claim to be one of Indonesia first luxury sleepers, arguably it is a good development of the rail travel in the country. I will tell more about the Jakarta - Yogyakarta luxury train facilities, route, and ticket prices below.

The Route

Indonesia's train ride was previously rather basic, but this can be described as an elevated experience on wheels. Taksaka is the name of the luxury train from Jakarta to Yogyakarta route. There is only one luxury train car called Taksaka Luxury Sleeper in this train which has a total of 10 cars. There’s space for just 18 guests for the luxury car, so expect an exclusive atmosphere. Taking travellers from Jakarta to Yogyakarta on a 7 hour  route across West and Central Java, Taksaka Train isn’t just about enjoying the breathtaking scenery from cabin windows, but also enjoying the train itself. The train boards in the morning at 9 am and reaches Yogyakarta at around 3.30 pm.

The Interior and Facility

Where modern meets old-school minimalism, the entire car is a balancing act of the best of both worlds.  An aesthetic of dark woods and plush leather runs throughout the seat which is designed like a business class seats on planes with huge seat, complete with head and arm rest. The seat itself can be inclined to horizontal position flatbed with a remote. Each seat has quite a distance from another seat, great for social distancing as well. The window is huge and has an adjustable curtain. Guests can expect a comfortable ride with mini TV in front of each seat and headphone jack on the side. There is also a small light for guests who loves to read during the journey. Phone charges is available and small lockers on the side and in front of the seat can be used to store belongings. Snacks, bottled water, coffee or tea and lunch are included in the ticket price, unlike the regular executive seat that doesn't include any refreshment. There's a foldable food tray in each seat and a mini dustbin. The toilet for the passengers in this train specifically is located at the end of the train.

Ticket Price and Overall Opinion

The ticket costs Rp 1.000.000 or around US$90 one way. I got an extra discount for the ticket as there were promotion at that time. You can book the train ticket here. Other routes with this type of luxury trains are Jakarta Surabaya with Bromo Anggrek Luxury Train and Jakarta Malang with Gajayana Luxury. For the services itself, I think the staff is quite attentive and helpful with our belongings as well. I don't really have anything to complain. Overall, I may feel that this type of train can be considered as special business class (in the plane) rather than luxury. It is rather difficult to compare this type of train with other luxury trains in the world like Belmond Eastern and Oriental Express, The Maharajas Express in India, or the Seven Stars Kyushu in Japan. Nevertheless, I really enjoyed this experience and would love to take another train route to different destinations. What do you think of this train journey? How's the train ride in your country?

  7. Ooo a luxury train ride, sign me up! This sounds like it was an excellent trip/service. A few weeks ago I had a dream I was on the sleep train, a train just for sleeping and I was sleeping peacefully on a train as it traveled through the snowy French Alps, I did not want to wake up!

  8. Hi there! So happy to see a new blog post by you over here and I see that is related to travel so it makes it even better!

I love trips in train and that's an advantage in Europe (it depends on your city) but at least there's a possiblity to take the train instead of the airplane and now we are getting better deals.

I didn't know about this train to Jogja, but the interiors and the space look delightful! And I also liked the fact that food is included in the ticket price, that's a great advantage! And we have to talk about those impressive views during the journey too :)

  14. I want to go from Gambir Station to Yogyakarta on the Taksaka luxury sleeper. The website shows rows A and B numbered from 1 to 9 for a total of 18 seats. Which row faces in the direction of travel and which end is furthest from the bathroom?
